Laminate Floor Maintenance

roseville-carpet-one-floor-home-chico-roseville-ca-laminate-floor-maintenance-flooring-tips-tricksLaminate flooring is naturally durable, making cleaning a breeze. Here, Chico Carpet One is going to give you a crash course on how to care for your laminate flooring and keep it looking great for years to come.

Even though laminate floors look like hardwood, they cannot be refinished. Therefore, it's worth your time and effort to keep them clean and free from damaging grit and moisture. A vacuum or a dry pad will often do the job. You can also use a damp mop for tougher spills.

Common Supplies

Chico Carpet One recommends you keep the following on hand to clean up basically any spill or mishap that may occur:

  • Vinegar
  • Baby Shampoo or Mild Dish Detergent
  • Terry or Sponge Mop
  • Window Cleaner
  • Ice Pack
  • Plastic Knife
  • Nail Polish Remover
  • Pencil Eraser

General Cleaning Instructions

Regularly sweep your laminate flooring. Sweep a dry dust mop across the surface of the floor every few days to remove everyday dirt. Even though laminate flooring is scratch-resistant, excess dirt, hair, and debris can cause scratches to develop if allowed to build up over time. Regular sweeping prevents such scratches from forming.

Instead of using a dry dust mop, you could also use a vacuum with a soft brush attachment. Do not use a standard floor brush or broom. The stiff, straw-like bristles on the brush could damage the surface. When sweeping, sweep in the direction that the laminate floor tiles were laid. Doing so allows you to pick up any debris that falls in between the grooves of the laminate flooring pieces.

Use Hot Water on Spills

Clean up spills immediately. Use a cloth or sponge to immediately clean up any liquid spills. Do not allow any liquid, even water, to sit on the floor for prolonged periods. Liquid can stain or damage the protective wear layer of the laminate flooring. Here are the steps to clean up a simple spill:

  1. FILL a bucket with hot water
  2. SOAK & WRING out a mop
  3. MOP the flooring thoroughly
  4. DRY the floors

Create a Vinegar/Water Mixture

For caked on mud or other stains that have caused your laminate to become faded or dull, Chico Carpet One suggests you create a solution of vinegar and water. Here are the steps to tackle a tougher spill:

  1. POUR 1/4 cup white vinegar into a 30 to 32 oz. spray bottle
  2. FILL the rest of the bottle with plain water
  3. SHAKE the solution well to combine
  4. SPRAY the solution onto the laminate a little a time
  5. WIPE the solution up with a damp mop or cloth
  6. DRY  the laminate

Gentle Soaps

Soapy water is a good choice when cleaning laminate floors that have been exposed to mud, or larger messes.

  1. FILL a bucket with hot water
  2. ADD roughly one gallon of warm to hot water to a large bucket
  3. ADD two tablespoons of a mild detergent or baby shampoo
  4. SOAK & WRING out a mop
  5. WIPE the floor from one side to the other
  6. DRY the laminate.

Suggestions for Removing Common Stains

For particularly tough stains, try the following remedies:

  • Clean blood stains with window cleaner
  • Remove chewing gum with a plastic knife
  • Wipe away soda, wine, crayon marks, or ink with a damp cloth
  • Get nail polish, shoe polish, or tar off with acetone nail polish remover
  • Erase heel marks and scuffs with a pencil eraser
  • Freeze away grease
Apply an ice pack or a package of frozen vegetables to the spot until the grease hardens. Scrape the frozen grease off using a plastic kitchen knife.

Also, Chico Carpet One suggests you use mats by exterior doors, runners or area rugs in high-traffic areas, and floor protectors beneath the feet and corners of heavy furniture. We hope the above care instructions are helpful, but always make sure to review the manufacturer's care instructions first when caring for your new laminate flooring.
