How to Remove Fruit & Sports Drink Stains from Your Carpet

carpet-one-floor-home-roseville-chico-ca-flooring-tips-tricks-remove-sports-drinks-fruitHow to Remove Fruit & Sports Drink Stains from Your Carpet The popularity of fruit flavored soft drinks, such as Kool-aid® and sport beverages (Gatorade®, Powerade®) has increased the likelihood of inconvenient spills on carpet. These spills need not cause alarm. Prior to the introduction of stain-resist treatments for carpet, such a mishap would have meant a permanent stain, but most carpet available today has been treated to resist these beverage stains. While no carpet is completely stain proof, most beverage spills can be removed with immediate action and patience.

In removing any spill from carpet, the most effective approach is to use patience and follow directions carefully. Often, consumers become convinced that a stain is permanent before the spot removal solution has had adequate time to begin lifting the spill. By taking immediate action and carefully following the spot removal directions listed, you can prevent permanent staining on most stain-resist treated carpet.

Here Chico Carpet One provides you with effective strategies for removing fruit drinks and soft drinks and keeping your carpet looking new and fresh for years.

First, blot the spill with a dry, white, absorbent cloth or plain white (no printing) paper towels. Do not scrub the area! Scrubbing can cause pile distortion in the affected area. Continue to use a dry cloth or paper towels to remove as much of the spill as possible. Always work from the outer edges of the spill to the center to prevent spreading. Then apply dry baking soda. Once it has dried scrape up the excess powder and vacuum the area thoroughly. I some baking soda is still remaining, use a damp sponge to rinse and remove the remaining baking soda. Don’t over-wet the sponge and blot the area, don’t rub it. Rinse the area with as described above another time. You will then want to apply a dry powder cleaner and vacuum the area carefully.

If your results are less than satisfactory using Method One, move on to Method Two.

Method Two for Cleaning

  1. VACUUM away as much as possible
  2. LOOSEN the remaining material by tapping with a scrub brush or toothbrush - do not scrub
  3. VACUUM
  4. APPLY dry powder
  5. TAP with brush to work powder into carpet tufts - do not scrub
  6. WAIT - let powder dry for one hour or more
  7. VACUUM
  8. REPEAT the dry powder application, if necessary

Most fruit flavor and sport beverages contain acid dyes such as red # 40, yellow # 5, yellow # 6, etc. and can be effectively removed using an alkaline detergent solution or a specialty carpet spot removal product available through Chico Carpet One. These solutions will effectively lift most beverage spills; however, prior to using any spot removal agent, ensure that its use will not void any carpet warranties. If you don’t have access to this information, we are always happy to provide you with the manufacturer’s warranty information. Should the spill remain after repeated removal attempts, contact a carpet cleaning professional. Carpet cleaning professionals have the ability and the equipment to use more aggressive stain removal solutions to remove stubborn spills. Chico Carpet One always suggests that you consider consulting a professional regarding any spot removal question.
